In any academic or philosophical endeavor, the crafting of models and frameworks is an exercise in simplification. The aim is to distill abstract or complex concepts into accessible forms, making them easier to understand.
Even well-regarded models like Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs have faced their fair share of critique and challenges over the years. Remember, models aren’t crafted for nuance; they’re designed to provide a framework through which we can view and interpret the world. As fewer people rely on traditional values frameworks, such as those prescribed by religious doctrines, we can benefit greatly from having reference guides for increasing self-awareness and supporting decisive action.
The Values Pyramid offers a perspective on how values can shift based on context and how consistently applying these values may lead to fulfillment. It’s essential, however, to underscore that such frameworks don’t claim universality. An individual could very well be operating from a survival standpoint, as situated at the base of the pyramid, yet be making impactful and fulfilling contributions. Think of a doctor working in a conflict zone or a firefighter saving lives as a building collapses.
So, fully acknowledging the messy nature of life, I present the Values Pyramid, a model developed with input from academics, data-driven insights, and analysis.
The Values Pyramid Framework
At the base of the pyramid lie our Survival values. Here, we find the fundamental necessities for human existence: security, food, water, and shelter. Financial security is included in this model because, without it, most of us quickly descend toward hardship or poverty. This financial security may come from work, family, a spouse, government support, or other means.
As we ascend, we reach the layer of Belonging. Here, we find love, encompassing our family bonds, friendships, and intimate relationships. It is the warmth of being part of a community and a society where people are treated with respect and fairness. A sense of belonging to planet Earth is the reason for sustainability being included here.
Climbing further, we encounter Growth values. This is where we find the passion for learning and growth in education and knowledge. It is here that we also experience the pursuit of physical and mental well-being. Achievement and competence are important aspects of growth, marking our striving for mastery and success in our personal and professional lives.
As we near the pyramid’s peak, we enter the realm of Impact. In this stratum, we value status and influence. High levels of competence often result in increased autonomy and a shift towards a focus on work-life balance. Alongside this, we grapple with wealth and material success, the tangible markers of our journey.
At the top of the pyramid, we arrive at Fulfillment. This is where we discover meaning and practice gratitude. Many seek a connection to something greater than themselves, whether spiritual, community, or a sense of unity with the universe. Becoming a steward for our planet and supporting others are common paths to the experience of fulfillment.
In this hierarchical construct, the more foundational values act as the bedrock upon which we build our lives. When these foundational values are threatened, they naturally demand our attention. As we secure each layer, we become free to explore and prioritize higher, possibly more fulfilling and enriching values.
Core Values Meta-Categories
Here is another way to look at the Values Pyramid, featuring the meta-categories—or states of being—survive, alive, and thrive.
Let’s explore each of these meta-categories in more detail.
- Survive: This foundational state is focused on meeting our essential needs for security, health, and resources—everything that’s necessary to maintain life and personal safety.
- Alive: In this context, being “Alive” is beyond mere survival; it’s where personal growth and development occur. This stage represents the awakening and energizing of one’s potential, encompassing learning, curiosity, and the development of physical, emotional, and mental capacities. It’s also where individuals begin to actively engage with life, pursue their interests, and experience the joys of personal achievements and relationships.
- Thrive: In the “Thrive” stage, individuals reach a level of flourishing that extends beyond the self. It’s about making a meaningful impact, achieving a sense of fulfillment, and contributing to the well-being of others. It’s the stage where one’s growth and aliveness translate into lasting influence and legacy.
